What is Maha Shivratri, and why is it so big in Kashi?
Maha Shivratri — literally "the great night of Shiva" — is the single most important festival of the year for Shaivites, marking the night sacred to Lord Shiva. For a city that is Shiva's own home, it is the most charged night on the calendar. Kashi Vishwanath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, so on this night the temple opposite our doorstep becomes the focus of hundreds of thousands of devotees who come to offer jalabhishek (a water and milk offering) to the lingam.
When is Maha Shivratri in 2027?
In 2027, Maha Shivratri falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. The festival follows the lunar calendar — the Chaturdashi (fourteenth night) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna — so the date shifts roughly ten to eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. The most sacred worship happens through the night, traditionally in four "prahars" (watches). Because the tithi's start and end times shift, confirm the exact night-puja windows closer to the date.
What actually happens at the temple that day?
Expect an all-day, all-night flow of devotees. Many fast through the day and break it only after night worship. The queues for jalabhishek stretch far back into the lanes, and the temple administration usually announces special crowd-management arrangements — dedicated queues, one-way lane systems, and extended darshan hours. Official passes, aarti bookings and any special-darshan slots are handled only at the official portal, shrikashivishwanath.org — never buy a "pass" from a tout in the lanes.
How do you plan darshan without losing the whole day to a queue?
A few honest tactics:
- Go very early or very late. The pre-dawn Mangala aarti window and the deep-night hours are less punishing than mid-morning. Read our Kashi Vishwanath darshan guide for the gate-and-locker basics that still apply — only more so on a peak day.
- Travel light. Leather, phones and cameras are not allowed inside; lockers near the gates fill fast on festival days.
- Stay within walking distance. On Maha Shivratri the old city goes largely pedestrian-only and vehicles are stranded far from the ghats. From Kashi King Luxury Stay, opposite Gate No. 4, the sanctum is about a 60-metre, one-minute walk — which on this of all nights is the difference between darshan and gridlock.
Is it worth combining with the Ganga aarti?
Yes. The evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is about an 8–10 minute flat walk from our door and makes a natural bookend to a Shivratri temple visit. If you would rather avoid the very heaviest crowds altogether, our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi explains the quieter windows on either side of festival season.
Frequently asked questions
When is Maha Shivratri in 2027? Maha Shivratri 2027 falls on Saturday, 6 March 2027. It is set by the lunar calendar (Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha, month of Phalguna), so confirm the exact night-puja tithi timings closer to the date.
Do I need a special pass for darshan on Maha Shivratri? Passes, aarti bookings and special-darshan slots are issued only through the official Kashi Vishwanath portal at shrikashivishwanath.org. Never buy a pass from a tout in the lanes.
How crowded is Kashi Vishwanath on Maha Shivratri? Extremely — hundreds of thousands of devotees come for jalabhishek, queues stretch deep into the old-city lanes, and the area around the temple usually turns pedestrian-only with all-night darshan.
What is the best time to reach the temple to avoid the worst queues? Pre-dawn (around the Mangala aarti window) or the deep-night hours are generally less crowded than mid-morning to afternoon. Staying a minute's walk away lets you time your visit to the lulls.
Can I carry my phone and belongings inside? No. Leather items, phones and cameras are not permitted inside the sanctum. Use the lockers near the gates, and travel as light as you can — lockers fill quickly on festival days.
Plan your Shivratri stay 60 seconds from darshan
Maha Shivratri is one of the few nights when where you sleep decides whether you get an unhurried darshan. Staying opposite Gate No. 4 means you step out, do one thing, and return to calm. See our rooms and request your dates — our team confirms every booking by phone.
