Dev Deepawali: the night a million diyas light the ghats

On Kartik Purnima — the full moon roughly fifteen days after Diwali; in 2026, the night of Tuesday 24 November — Varanasi lines its entire ghat crescent with lakhs of earthen lamps and amplifies the evening Ganga aarti into a grand spectacle. It is the city’s most extraordinary night, and its single biggest booking window: rooms and rooftops near the Kashi Vishwanath corridor sell out months ahead.

The classic vantage is Dashashwamedh and the central ghats — about an 8-to-10-minute flat walk from our door opposite Gate No. 4 — while a boat on the Ganga gives you the full sweep of illuminated steps. Lamps are lit at dusk, so arrive well before sunset for a stair seat, or pre-arrange a boat to avoid the crush. On the night, the lanes around Godowlia turn pedestrian-only with heavy diversions, so staying within walking distance of the ghats is the difference between watching the diyas and sitting in gridlock.

We help guests plan the evening — boat seats, aarti timing and the short walk over — and our Dev Deepawali package pairs a premium air-conditioned room with a sunrise boat ride and airport pickup.
